Emergency Medical Services/Basic — Certificate of Development:

This program is designed as an introduction to Emergency Medical Services leading to Basic Emergency Medical Technician licensure. Basic EMTs undergo training in fundamental life support procedures and the principles of caring for and transporting individuals who are sick or injured. Basic EMT licensure qualifies individuals for entry-level positions as emergency care providers within municipal and private ambulance services, as well as certain hospital emergency departments.

Upon program completion, a graduate will be eligible to sit for the National Registry Exam, and upon successful completion, be licensed as an Emergency Medical Technician - Basic in the prehospital field of EMS, public safety, and fire rescue in many states.

Emergency Medical Technician (non-degree*): 

This program is designed as an introduction to Emergency Medical Services leading to Basic Emergency Medical Technician licensure. Basic EMTs undergo training in fundamental life support procedures and the principles of caring for and transporting individuals who are sick or injured. Basic EMT licensure qualifies individuals for entry-level positions as emergency care providers within municipal and private ambulance services, as well as certain hospital emergency departments.

Upon program completion, a student will be eligible to sit for the National Registry Exam, and upon successful completion, be licensed as an Emergency Medical Technician - Basic in the prehospital field of EMS, public safety, and fire rescue in many states.

*This is a non-degree program intended for students who do not want financial aid.


EMS/EMT Program Requirements:

Prospective students must first complete North Central's  before applying to the EMS/EMT program. Once you have completed the application and been accepted for admission, please complete the following three requirements:

1. Authorize and pass a background check.

Accepted students must authorize Viewpoint Screening to perform a background check. Michigan Public Health Act 27, 28 and 29 of 2006 require that clinical agencies perform a background check on all employees, including students who participate in clinical experiences. Certain felonies and misdemeanors may exclude a student from participating in clinical experiences and thus being part of the North Central EMS/EMT program. For an interpretation of these laws, read the 

A background check costs approximately $35.

2. Set up your health portal.

Once the background check is complete, students will receive another link from Viewpoint Screening to set up their health portal with the requirements listed in this document.

NOTE: It is the student's responsibility to keep all health records and immunizations up to date and provide copies to their Viewpoint Screening health portal.

3. Complete and pass a drug screening.

A negative 10-panel drug screen must be completed no earlier than 30 days prior to clinical rotation. A link will be sent to students after the semester begins.

The 10-panel test includes: Amphetamines, Barbituates, Benzodiazepines, Cocaine Matabolites, Marijuana Metabolites, Methadone, Methaqualone, Opiates, Oxycodone, Phencyclidine, and Propoxyphen.
